Livestock farmers warned of risk posed by two types of fungi, fusarium and ergot.

Livestock farmers are being warned about the potential risk posed by two types of fungi, fusarium and ergot, in grain. Farmers are urged to learn how to identify signs of these fungi, as their presence in this summer’s grain harvest could be higher. The AHDB attributes the likely increase in ergot and fusarium to the wetter-than-average weather during the 2024 growing season. Although crops processed through a mill will be thoroughly checked, the risk persists for grain used directly on farms to feed livestock. Ergot, which can contaminate wheat, barley, rye, triticale, and oats, is particularly toxic and can cause serious illness in both humans and livestock. It can constrict blood vessels and damage the nervous system, leading to seizures, loss of muscle strength, poor coordination, and, in severe cases, death. Initial signs often include lameness, followed by an increased temperature and respiratory rate.
